Downwind Machine
The Ultra is unlike any downwind foil you've seen. With a smooth take off and incredible speed range its built to perform in all conditions. What sets it apart is its ability to carve rail to rail in a way that no other downwind foil can.
Who's it for?
Discipline: Downwind
Skill Level: Intermediate, Advanced
Riding Style: Excelling for downwind riders, but also performing fantastic for wing or prone in rolling swell.
What Makes The Ultra Different?
Efficiency & Glide
Tubercles and a slim design paired with a high AR foil means it is the ultimate for efficiency and glide through the water.
- Aspect ratio of 14
- Ultra thin design & fast profile
- Tubercles for slippery feeling
- Winglets reduce unwanted tip vortices (drag)
Rail To Rail Carving
As with all AFS foils the Ultra turns incredibly well. Flying downwind on bumps is fun, but what's more fun is ripping them up like an an endless wave.
- Thin tips reduce resistance to roll
- Ultra stiff design increases responsiveness
- Tubercles keep the foil stable at high bank angles
Tip Breaching
Designed to push the limits of carving, the ultra excels at tip breaching.
- Tubercles keep the foil lifting while breaching
- So smooth you don't even notice
- Thin tips slice the water with ease
Monoblock Design—Why It Matters
The front wing and fuselage are one piece, making the Silk incredibly stiff and efficient.
- Less flex, more direct response.
- Slim connection = maximum water efficiency.
Built Different—World-Class Construction
Made in France, Not a Generic Factory
Most foils are mass-produced in China. AFS owns their own factory in France, allowing for:
- Tighter quality control
- Higher level of finish
- More advanced carbon construction
Ultra High Modulus (UHM) Carbon
By using UHM carbon, AFS achieves:
- A stiffer, lighter foil
- More refinement & design freedom
- Better performance in every condition
Tubercles: What Are They & Why Do They Matter?
Tubercles (those bumps on the leading edge) have one job—to delay flow separation.
💡 What’s flow separation?
It’s when water stops following the foil before the trailing edge, causing instability, inconsistent lift, and loss of control. Every foil deals with this problem.
Tubercles fix this by creating tiny vortices that keep water attached to the foil for longer, making the Ultra:
- More stable at all speeds—no unexpected lift changes.
- Incredibly smooth through turns—even at high bank angles.
- More predictable in turbulent water—great for white water and choppy conditions.
You know when your foot pressure changes when a wave builds power or your speed changes?
The Ultra eliminates that. It stays steady no matter what, so you can push harder with total confidence.
Are There Any Downsides?
Only one—a slight reduction in absolute top speed. That’s why AFS race foils don’t use tubercles.
But here’s the thing:
- Unless you’re an expert racing at max velocity, this won’t matter.
- The Ultras stability actually lets you ride faster, because you can push harder without hesitation.
- Thanks to its thin, ultra-efficient design, the Ultra is still one of the fastest downwind foils in the world.
Why Don’t All Foils Have Tubercles?
Simple—they’re harder to design and manufacture.
- Outsourced production = lower quality control → Most brands can’t get tubercles right.
- AFS owns their own factory → They have the precision needed to make them work perfectly.
This is why AFS is the only brand making high-performance tubercle foils at this level.
Tubercles Have Proven Benefits In Research
This isn't just marketing—tubercles have been extensively studied in hydrodynamics & aerodynamics, with CFD simulations and real-world testing proving their ability to reduce flow separation, increase stability, and improve efficiency.
The Bottom Line
The Ultra isn’t just another downwind foil—it’s a precision-engineered machine built for speed, control, and next-level carving. With tubercles for stability, an ultra-thin profile for glide, and a monoblock carbon construction for unmatched stiffness, it delivers a riding experience like no other.
Whether you're chasing endless bumps or pushing hard in rolling swell, the Ultra gives you the confidence to ride faster, turn harder, and stay in control in any conditions.
If you're serious about downwind performance, this is the foil that will take you there.

Choosing Your Mast
At AFS, we offer two high-performance carbon mast options, each delivering exceptional value at different price points. The key difference lies in hydrodynamic efficiency—how smoothly they cut through water, minimizing drag.
Both masts feature the innovative Fuselink connection, ensuring a streamlined profile, a rock-solid interface, and full compatibility across the entire AFS foil range.
HR Carbon Mast – Performance Meets Value
The HR Carbon mast is incredibly stiff and lightweight, built using high-resilient (HR) carbon. It delivers the performance of a high-modulus mast at a price point lower than most standard carbon masts, making it an industry leader in value.
- 80cm length – The perfect all-around size for every discipline: wing, prone, dock starts, or downwind.
- 16mm profile – A slim, efficient design that enhances glide and speed while maintaining stability.
- 135mm chord – Provides a rock-solid, predictable feel—ideal for beginners and progressing riders.
- 1.6kg weight – Lighter than most high-modulus masts while maintaining exceptional stiffness.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a performance upgrade without the premium price tag, the HR mast is an unbeatable choice.
UHM Carbon Mast – Unrivaled Performance
The UHM Carbon mast is regarded as the best in the world. Built with ultra-high modulus (UHM) carbon, this mast is designed to be as thin as possible without sacrificing stiffness, delivering an unparalleled riding experience.
- From 12.3mm Thick – Reduces drag for higher top speeds, longer glides, and more efficient pumping.
- From 100mm Chord – Enhances turning precision, making carves feel sharper, tighter, and more connected.
- Super lightweight – Weighing as little as 1.5kg, the UHM mast is among the lightest and stiffest on the market.
For those seeking maximum speed, glide, and responsiveness, the UHM mast is the ultimate choice.
Mast Length Guide
Mast length affects responsiveness, glide, turning ability, and overall ease of use. Riders coming from other brands often find they can size down on an AFS mast due to the stability of our foils.
We offer two UHM mast constructions:
- Standard UHM – The industry benchmark for stiffness and performance.
- Skinny UHM (75 & 85cm only) – A slimmer, even lower-drag version with a minor stiffness penalty, best suited for smaller foils. If you primarily ride larger foils (Ultra & Enduro 1300), you may notice some flex—though most riders find it negligible.
Here’s how to choose your ideal mast length:
UHM 75 – Ultimate Maneuverability
✔ Best for: Prone, downwind, dock starts
✔ Why? The 75cm mast delivers exceptional turning, glide, and pump efficiency. While it can be used for wingfoiling, it’s recommended only if you primarily ride other disciplines.
UHM 80 – The All-Rounder
✔ Best for: Everything – prone, wing, dock, downwind, surf
✔ Why? The 80cm mast is the ultimate do-it-all choice, offering a perfect balance of glide, stability, and responsiveness. If you enjoy multiple disciplines, this is the mast for you.
UHM 85 – Chop-Clearing & Big Wave Power
✔ Best for: Wingfoiling, kite, big waves
✔ Why? If you’re a dedicated winger or frequently ride larger waves, the extra length provides more clearance over chop and added control at high speeds.
UHM 95 – Built for Speed
✔ Best for: Racing, high-performance wingfoiling
✔ Why? Designed for maximum speed and stability, the 95cm mast allows you to push harder and faster. Even if your coming from a longer mast, we recommend the 85cm unless you’re focused on racing.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right mast depends on your riding style, discipline, and performance goals. If you’re looking for the best balance of value and performance, the HR Carbon Mast is an unbeatable option. If you want the pinnacle of efficiency and speed, the UHM Carbon Mast delivers world-class performance.
